its really easy to get used to.
ok here is a basic quick guide to get
ya used to your surroundings...

THE TILESETS:
OK, Lets get started, there are thousands of
tilesets to the game, each for differant types of
places, for example, say you want to make a snow town,
you would use the snow town tileset, to do this you must click
on the little folder under the tileset with the name of your
game on, right-click and press new map, there you can choose
the tilesets you want, the songs, name of the map etc.
Now, select the tileset name you want, now, we want the
snow town tileset, so we find it, make sure you dont get
mixed up with the snow field, or snow town inn, So, select
and press ok, do all the things you wanna do with it, aka, the
music, name etc, so now we have our tileset, so, click on the
tileset, (the picture, watever ya wanna call it) and select the
layer, (we will talk about them later) and then you simply pic
the block on the map, (a bit hard to explain) and past
it on there, sometimes you will need to mess about with it
to get the right look, plus to select a giant tree for example,
DONT select 1 tileset everytime, it takes too long, drag and
select it. Then paste it. Now...There is also a even better touch,
you can add your own tileset, so you can make your own maps
and touches, Which rawks cause then you can do alot. Now there
is one thing bad about it, the tilesets, watever is on them you cant
add to another map unless that map is the same tileset, otherwise
it will just be replaced by the thing that the other map has.

LAYERS:
Layers can be a bit complicated when you first start, but
you will get used to them very soon, now, First we will
name all the layers, now, can you see the 4 buttons at the
top, 3 with the orange bits in it, and 1 other one thats a blue
3D square, so, the 1st one, (the one with the orange bit at
the bottum is the one you start with first when creating a map.
It is the one where you put Grass, or anything that is envolved
with the ground design, easy! now once you have put grass on
the map, (snow, sand watever), you go to the layer next to it,
(the one with the orange bit in the middle) now, DONT for example,
put a tree on the first layer, it makes it look really newbish because
the tree will not be transparent and have a white background, now
anyway, Layer 2, this one is for example, putting houses, statues
and things ya'know trees etc, pretty simple, just DONT put windows
or anything on the houses or trees etc when on layer 2, or once again
the things will have a white background, so, go to Layer 3,
(the one with the orange bit at the top), there you put things that
go on the houses or small things like flowers, things to add a nice
touch to the effect. All of them are pretty easy, But now we are
going to go into the 4th layer, (the one with the blue 3D block!)
this one isnt for background objects like tree's etc, this one is for
things that are at the place, basically people, monsters, etc. Just
double-click on the tile on the map and a box will come up, there
will be a big blue box to your Left, with that you can select a graphic,
select it and saught out all the things, like speed, etc, player touch,
parralel procces, etc. I will tell you a bit about the script
for it etc, (but I cant carry on now, this has tooken so long cause
I broke my fingers TT_TT

Anyway, I will try and continue this!

enjoy!

Another question, how can I get custom made tilesets or character sprites into RPG Maker?

That's not dificult, everything you need to do is use the Resourse Maneger.

1st:Click in the Resourse Maneger button.

Note 1:My RPG Maker XP is in Portuguese.
